The Radiation Oncology Center located on the campus of Mercy San Juan Hospital provides outpatient cancer treatment in a facility designed for patient comfort. The use of natural materials, lighting and color combine to reduce the patient’s stress while they receive treatment with state-of-the-art equipment. Nacht & Lewis Architects started design work in 1990 on the facility with the building being completed in 1992.
Nacht & Lewis
Nacht & Lewis Architects was selected to master plan a 13-acre site for Kaiser Permanente in Davis, California. As part of the first phase of the plan, the design and construction of this medical office building took place. It was completed in 1990 and contains a general lab, a pharmacy, and various administrative offices.
Completed in the late 1980’s, Tehama Hall is a 90,000 sq. ft. structure that added additional lecture and laboratory space to the campus of Chico State. The hall also includes a self-instruction center with 248 computer stations.
Nacht & Lewis was retained to program and design a new Main County Jail facility for El Dorado County. The facility was designed to accommodate 196 inmates in a mix of single cells and dormitories. The design reflects the two distinct functional requirements of the new jail: 1) Two 2-tier housing modules which provide 128 single cells, four 16-bed dormitories, dayrooms, indoor and outdoor exercise areas, visiting and inmate program areas and 2) A two story administrative support module which provides staff and administration spaces, booking, intake/release, infirmary with medical and dental suites, food service, kitchen, laundry and central control.
The Jail is sited on a radically sloping site in Placerville. The multi-level modules step down the slope to effectively take advantage of the terrain to facilitate external and internal circulation and to reduce the visible mass of the building. To facilitate a court ordered construction schedule, the construction process was split into three phases: 1) Site Preparation, 2) Foundation and 3) Building Construction. The building was positioned to allow for master planned future expansion of the housing units up to a total capacity of 400 beds. The double decked main corridor for separate inmate and visitor movement is also expandable lineally to future housing units.
The control room at the center of the housing unit commands a 360-degree unobstructed view of supervision with communication consoles. This design is a direct result of the staffing efficiency analysis conducted by Nacht & Lewis and Consultants. In 2006 Nacht & Lewis was selected to design the El Dorado County Main Jail Expansion. The project is currently on hold.
In 1983, Nacht & Lewis designed the main post office building in Auburn, California. It still serves the community today.
Capitol Area Development Agency (CADA) commissioned Nacht & Lewis to design a mixed use office and apartment building in downtown Sacramento. The result was a beautiful building which houses offices for CADA on the first floor and has apartments on the second floor.
Built for the Sacramento Housing & Redevelopment Agency in 1982, this 20 unit residential housing complex is located in the Arden Arcade area of Sacramento. The project focuses on design with sustainable features within affordable housing.
Originally built for World Savings Bank in 1982, this 42,000 sq. ft. bank sits in what was once known as the World Savings Plaza. The facility is now being occupied by a Wells Fargo Branch Bank.
This bank is an example of postmodernism architecture, a style which was popular in the early 1980’s. Many of the work of Nacht & Lewis designed at this time were greatly influenced by this style. Postmodernism continues to have an effect on local architecture today and is evident in the Sacramento skyline.
This was originally designed as a local branch for First Interstate Bank in 1982. The facility is now occupied by Chase Bank.
This parking structure was built in conjunction with the new California Energy Commission building on 9th and P Street. The garage is ideally situated across from the California Women’s History Museum providing visitors to downtown Sacramento and state workers alike a convenient place to park.
Completed in 1981, this state office building was one of eight state office buildings commissioned to demonstrate energy conscious design.
The project was designed to maximize natural light thereby reducing the energy required for artificial illumination. The building is stepped both in plan and in section, creating relatively narrow interior spaces flooded with daylight. A central atrium is used for circulation as well as natural lighting. Open plan furnishing systems were provided for at all levels, with enclosed offices located away from exterior louvered window walls.
Currently the offices of the California Energy Commission reside within the building.
Originally designed in 1979, this shopping center was formally known as the Hewitt Shopping Center. It sits across from McKinely Park in downtown Sacramento and currently houses various shops and a restaurant.
This facility was the former home to Nacht & Lewis that was tailored to facilitate the operations of architects and engineers, and function as a traditional multi-tenant office building. The project includes an aluminum and glass exterior. The materials provides a reflective quality that reduces cooling and keeps utility costs to a minimum. Each office opens into a central atrium and provides natural daylight to the interior offices.
Winner of the AIA – Central Valley Chapter – Craftsmanship Award.
This project was a proposal for The Pacific Telephone Company’s new equipment building in Grass Valley, California. The outline of the site can still be seen in the preliminary proposal for the facility.
In 1977, our firm designed additional space for the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company’s office in Vallejo. This structure was primarily a phone equipment and switching facility. An expansion to the main office was also designed by the firm.
Another project completed by our firm for Sacramento State University was Tahoe Hall in 1976.
Richard Lewis, former principal, designed and built this own home in the Fair Oaks community of North Ridge Country Club Estates in Sacramento. The 3,000 sq. ft. home was the winner of the Masonry Institute Merit Award.
Through the long relationship that began with the design of the administration building in 1974, Nacht & Lewis has completed numerous projects for the Sacramento Regional Transit. The projects consist of an addition to the break room, landscaping, and parking and garage space.
