As the year draws to a close, we are proud to celebrate the remarkable career of John Flath, who officially retired from Nacht & Lewis after 21 incredible years. As the lead healthcare principal, John’s contributions have been instrumental in shaping our firm’s legacy, and his impact will resonate for years to come. He has been more than a mentor to his colleagues and peers—he has become a lifelong friend.
John joined Nacht & Lewis on October 8, 2001, bringing with him an impressive healthcare portfolio and a reputation for excellence. Over the course of his career, John became a trusted authority within the healthcare design industry, earning respect for his technical expertise and ability to collaborate with medical professionals in highly specialized fields such as radiology, radiation therapy, surgery, and dialysis.
John’s influence can be seen in over 100 HCAi (formerly OSHPD) projects, where he served as the Architect of Record. His expertise in diagnostic imaging, complex hospital remodels, OSHPD 1 & 3 projects, and alternate project delivery methods—including CM at Risk and Design Build—has set a standard of excellence that few can match.
Some of John’s most notable projects include:
- Sonoma Valley Hospital – New Emergency Department and Operating Room Addition
- UCSF Orthopaedic Institute, Mission Bay – A state-of-the-art facility for advanced orthopedic care
- Department of Veterans Affairs Sacramento Medical Center – Emergency Room Addition
Beyond his technical achievements, John has been a cornerstone of Nacht & Lewis, fostering a culture of mentorship, collaboration, and innovation.
Now, as John embarks on this new chapter, he looks forward to spending time on his boat with his wife, enjoying well-deserved adventures, and cherishing moments with his children and grandchildren.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to John for his dedication, leadership, and friendship. His legacy will always be a part of Nacht & Lewis.
