Starks Jozens & Nacht

The Whelan Office Buildings were located in the Palo Alto Industrial Park near Stanford University.

The property was developed as a professional office building complex by John Whelan who received a lease from Stanford University in 1957 with the buildings being completed in 1961. The Structures housed a variety of tenants including physicians, psychologists, and dentist as well as lawyers, engineers, and accountants.

The project was featured in the magazine Arts and Architecture, March 1957.

While being surveyed for Architectural significance in 2010 by City of Palo Alto the buildings were misidentified as the work of Modernist Don Knorr in their historic dismissal of the buildings for the environmental review of the new Lucille Stanford Children’s Hospital.

Special thanks to Justin Wood for bringing this project back to life through his excellent research.

Portions of this post are from the Environmental Impact Report by Steve Turner, Advance Planning Manger for the City of Palo Alto.

Designed in 1969 for California State University Sacramento. This building is home to the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies.

Designed in 1967 to serve the growing community of Fulton-El Camino Recreation and Park District, the Howe Community Center, now named The Richard T. Conzelmann Community Center, hosts the Park District’s main office as well as an auditorium and meeting rooms that are available to the community for rent.

The Gordon D. Schaber Courthouse is home to the main administrative offices of the court, as well as containing trial courtrooms, the Department of the Presiding Judge, and the general civil and criminal case processing support units. Built in 1965, the courthouse is still in use today.

Completed in 1965, the Child Guidance Center is one of the facilities designed by Nacht & Lewis located on the campus of Sutter Memorial Hospital.

The original address of this building was 5275 F Street and has now changed to accommodate the new facilities added to the campus. This building has been integrated into the Sutter Memorial Hospital Neonatal Building.

Built in 1963, the El Dorado Union High School District Ponderosa High School is located on a 38 acre oak tree-lined campus. This campus was recognized by the community and the building industry alike for its distinctive design which took full advantage of its rural setting.

The design is aesthetically pleasing with striking views which is why it is known as one of the most beautiful high school campuses in Northern California.

The campus was featured in the September 1964 edition of Architectural Record Magazine.

Starks, Jozens, and Nacht designed the Scottish Rite Temple in 1963. It was originally intended to be designed in the ornate Beaux Arts style. Due to budgetary concerns, it wasn’t able to be fully accomplished. Starks, Jozens, and Nacht were the architects on phase two in 1965 and an addition in 1968.

The Sacramento County Welfare building once stood at the corner of Stockton Blvd. and X Street. The building and property were later sold to University of California, Davis after the county moved out of the building to a more central location in downtown Sacramento. Absorbed into the campus of U.C. Davis the building was demolished and a parking structure and hospital now sit on the welfare building’s former site. This building was a beautiful example of mid-century modernism.

This medical office building was constructed in 1961. Design work began in 1959 with several possible schemes being rendered, one of which still survives. Once the final design was agreed to construction began. This facility is now associated with Sutter Memorial Hospital and is named the Sutter Children’s Outpatient Building.

Originally designed in 1959 to house insurance companies and law firms, this office building is currently a mixed use building with a restaurant on the first floor and offices above.

Designed in 1959 by Starks, Jozens, and Nacht, the motel is located in the Civic Center area of San Francisco. The motel was originally called the Graft and Light Motel. Today it is known as the Oasis Motel.

Designed in1959 by Starks, Jozens, & Nacht, the building originally was designed to house the Administration Center for the Grant Union High School District. Currently it is the police facility for Twin Rivers Unified School District.

Starks, Jozens, & Nacht designed one of the first community churches for the newly developed suburb of Land Park, Sacramento in 1957. Parkside Community Church has since expanded and is still active in the Land Park community today.
