St. Joseph’s Medical Center needed to expand their existing Emergency Department due to a corporate merger that would add a significant number of patients to the current population. Nacht & Lewis was taxed with creating a functional low- to medium-acuity treatment space with the maximum number of treatment spaces within a two-year time period to be able to meet the anticipated demand.
Nacht & Lewis responded by collaborating with the Emergency Department Staff and Administration to expand into the adjacent, unoccupied Heart Center Building to create a 23-bay treatment space that would grow the capacity of the existing 50-bed Emergency Department. The space was designed with an open floor plan to allow for good staff circulation with spaces flexible enough to handle the needs of higher acuity patients, if necessary. The project was phased to allow for minimal department downtime during construction; the entire space was opened for occupancy just 20 months after the commencement of design services.
